Terms of Service

Last updated 22 October 2026 · version 2026-10-22

Preview draft, pending legal review. These terms apply to people we have invited to use a preview of the Apps. They have not yet been reviewed by our lawyers and may change after that review. If they change, we will show you the new version in the App and ask you to accept it before it applies to you.

These terms are published by Janisis, Inc., a company incorporated in Delaware, United States ("Janisis", "we", "us"). They cover the Sum∗ suite of apps, including SumMoney, and the SumOne account service that links them (together, the "Apps" and the "Service").

1. About these terms

1.1 What you agree to. These Terms of Service and the Subscription and Trial Terms (https://sumone.app/legal/subscription) together form our agreement with you (the "Agreement"). Our Privacy Policy (https://sumone.app/legal/privacy) explains how we handle personal information. It is a notice, not part of the contract, and we ask for your consent separately, at the moment you turn on each feature that needs it.

1.2 How you accept. The App shows you these documents the first time you open it. By tapping to continue, you accept the Agreement. If you do not accept, do not use the Apps.

1.3 Our record of your acceptance. Your device signs a record of what you accepted with its own key and sends it to us. The record shows which document and version you saw (by a fingerprint of its exact text), the time, the App and platform, and the trial length. We add the time we received it and the country your connection came from. We keep this record as evidence of our agreement, even if you later delete your account. The Privacy Policy explains how long we keep it and how to get a copy.

1.4 Age. You must be at least 16 to use the Apps. You must be 18, or have a parent or guardian's permission, to buy a subscription. The Apps are not made for children.

2. Your licence to use the Apps

2.1 We give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the Apps on devices you own or control, for your own records and your household's finances. You can end it at any time by deleting the Apps.

2.2 You may not copy, change, or make derivative works of the Apps. You may not reverse engineer them, except where the law lets you do so despite this clause. You may not rent, sell, sublicense or redistribute the Apps, or use them to run a service for other people.

2.3 Your records are yours. Nothing in the Agreement gives us ownership of the records you keep in the Apps. You give us only the permission we need to move, store and process them to provide the features you choose.

2.4 The Apps include open source components. Their licences are listed in the App under About, Acknowledgements, and they apply to those components.

3. If you got an App from Apple's App Store

3.1 If you downloaded an App from Apple's App Store, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement applies to that copy. These terms apply alongside it. If the two conflict on your use of the App as licensed by Apple, Apple's terms win.

3.2 You and Janisis, not Apple, are the parties to the Agreement. Janisis, not Apple, is solely responsible for the Apps and their content.

3.3 Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the Apps.

3.4 If an App fails to meet a warranty that applies to it, you may tell Apple, and Apple may refund the price you paid for it, if any. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the Apps.

3.5 Janisis, not Apple, is responsible for handling any claim about the Apps, including product liability claims, claims that an App fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.

3.6 If anyone claims that an App or your use of it infringes their intellectual property, Janisis, not Apple, is responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.

3.7 You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a US government embargo or one designated as "terrorist supporting", and that you are not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

3.8 You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the Apps, such as your mobile carrier's terms, and the terms of any bank connection service you choose (see section 8).

3.9 Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of the Agreement. Once you accept it, Apple has the right to enforce it against you as a third-party beneficiary.

3.10 Questions, complaints and claims about the Apps go to us: see section 23.

4. What the Apps are, and what they are not

4.1 The Apps are private record-keeping and calculation tools. They help you record what you earn, spend, owe and own, and work out figures from those records.

4.2 Most of what the Apps show is worked out on your own device from records you enter or import. Some features use our servers or other providers, as the Privacy Policy explains feature by feature.

4.3 The Apps never make payments or transfers. Bank connections are read-only.

4.4 Bank connection services are run by other companies. We are not your bank, a payment service, a credit provider or a financial adviser. We are not accredited under Australia's Consumer Data Right. Australian open-banking feeds are not available in the Apps.

5. General information, not advice

5.1 Figures such as balances, totals, "safe to spend", runway, forecasts and insights are arithmetic on the records you keep. They do not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs.

5.2 Nothing the Apps show, say or suggest is financial, investment, credit, tax, accounting or legal advice, or a recommendation about any financial product. Tags such as tax categories are labels for your own records. Whether you can claim something depends on tax law and your situation. For decisions that matter, check your bank and official records and talk to a licensed or registered professional.

5.3 Figures depend on what you put in. Check important figures against your statements, invoices and receipts before you rely on them.

6. Assisted, AI and voice features

6.1 Some optional features use AI. These include Suite voice and its spoken answers, and "Enhance with AI", which looks up businesses from your transactions. Each is off until you turn it on. The AI and Voice notice (https://sumone.app/legal/ai-voice) says exactly what travels, to whom, and when.

6.2 When the App answers a question about your money, it works the figures out from your records. AI is used to understand your question and word the answer. AI can still mishear you, misunderstand you, or word an answer wrongly. Speech recognition can get numbers, names and dates wrong.

6.3 The assistant is built not to recommend financial products, investments or tax positions, and not to tell you what to do with your money. It can still get this wrong. Treat every answer as general information and check it before you act.

6.4 AI output is a suggestion. The App asks you to confirm before it changes your records, and it never moves money.

6.5 If an answer is wrong, tap "That's not right" on it, or tell us at support@sumone.app.

7. Accounts and sync

7.1 You can use the Apps without an account. A SumOne account, verified by email, adds sync between your devices, device linking and sharing. During the preview, accounts are open only to people we invite.

7.2 Keep your devices and email account secure. Anyone who controls your email can sign in to your SumOne account.

7.3 Sync is end-to-end encrypted. Your ledger records are encrypted on your device before they are synced, and only your devices hold the keys. Our sync service cannot read them. Other features, such as bank connections and receipt forwarding, are not end-to-end encrypted. The Privacy Policy explains each one.

7.4 If you share a ledger with someone, they can see and change what you share, and they keep any copy on their devices or any export they made, even after you stop sharing.

7.5 When you create an account, your device's acceptance records are linked to it. Nothing in them is rewritten.

8. Bank connections and other services you choose

8.1 On the Mac App, you can connect a bank through Plaid, or a Revolut Business account through Revolut. You sign in with that provider, not with us. Each provider acts under its own terms and privacy policy, which you accept with them.

8.2 To keep a connection working, we store the access the provider gives us, encrypted on our servers, and use it only to fetch your data when your App asks. You can disconnect at any time in the App. The Privacy Policy explains what happens on disconnect.

8.3 Data from banks and other providers can be late, incomplete or wrong. We do not control it.

8.4 Some connection tiles in the App are marked "Notify me at launch". They are not connected to anything yet.

9. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

10. Your content and feedback

10.1 You are responsible for the records and files you add and for having the right to add them.

10.2 If you send us ideas, reports or suggestions ("feedback"), you give us a free, permanent, worldwide licence to use them to improve our products, without paying you or naming you. We will not publish your feedback in a way that identifies you without your permission.

11. Fees, trial and read-only mode

11.1 The Subscription and Trial Terms (https://sumone.app/legal/subscription) cover fees, the 45-day trial, and read-only mode.

11.2 In short: the trial needs no payment card and never turns into a paid plan on its own. When it ends, the App becomes read-only. You can still view and export what each App can export, but you cannot add or change records, and sync pauses. We never delete your records because you have not paid. Paid plans are not on sale yet, and nothing is charged during the preview.

11.3 Who sells paid plans. When paid plans open, they will be sold through Stripe's Managed Payments, with Link as the seller of record. Link takes payment, handles sales tax, VAT and GST, issues receipts and invoices, and handles billing support and refunds under its own terms. Janisis provides the Apps and the Service, and the Agreement about them is between you and Janisis. The Subscription and Trial Terms give the details, including prices and tax, the founding member price, add-ons and tax changes.

11.4 Where paid plans are available. Paid plans are offered only in the countries listed at https://sumone.app/legal/countries, and never in sanctioned or embargoed countries. We may refuse or cancel, with a refund, a plan bought from a country where it is not offered, including by billing address.

11.5 Codes, referrals and gift cards. Promotion codes, the referral programme and gift cards are covered by the Subscription and Trial Terms. People who promote the Apps for a commission sign our Affiliate Terms (https://sumone.app/legal/affiliates), which are separate from this Agreement.

12. Preview terms

12.1 The Apps are a preview. Features may change, move, break or be removed while we build them. Some features are incomplete, and some screens may show sample data.

12.2 There is no service level commitment during the preview. The Service may be unavailable at times.

12.3 Please keep your own exports while you use the preview (see section 14).

12.4 Invited preview users also agree to the one-page Preview Agreement (https://sumone.app/legal/beta).

13. Changes

13.1 Changes to the Agreement. Each document has a version and a fingerprint of its exact text. You are bound by the version you accepted. If we make a change that matters, we will show you the new version in the App and ask you to accept it before it applies. If you do not accept, you can stop using the Apps and export your records, and any prepaid fees for the unused period will be refunded.

13.2 Changes to features. We may add, change or remove features. If we remove or materially reduce a feature that is part of a paid plan you hold, we will tell you at least 30 days before, in the App or by email. If you no longer want the plan, you can cancel and we will refund the unused part of any prepaid period, pro rata.

13.3 We may make changes faster where we must for security, to follow the law, or because a provider stops its service. We will tell you as soon as we can.

14. Your records, backups and recovery

14.1 How the Apps protect your records. Your ledger records are encrypted on your own devices before they are synced. Janisis does not hold the keys that open them. So Janisis cannot read your ledger records, and it also cannot recover, rebuild or restore them for you. We do not offer a data recovery service, and our support team cannot bring back records you can no longer open. Getting back into your account (for example, with a sign-in code) does not give you back records that are not on any of your devices.

14.2 What recovery depends on. Whether your records can come back after a problem depends on what you have kept. Your records can come back from:

Your 12 words are shown to you once. They are not kept on any device or by Janisis. Your extra passphrase is never stored by us or by the Apps and is never printed on your Emergency Kit. If you lose the 12 words, or set a passphrase and forget it, no one, including Janisis, can use the Emergency Kit to open your records.

14.3 Kit restore is not yet available. On the date of this version, restoring from an Emergency Kit inside the Apps is not available in the released Apps. The same applies to restoring a ledger from an encrypted.sum backup file. Until the App tells you that restore is available on your platform, an Emergency Kit cannot by itself bring your records back. Keep at least one other signed-in device and your own up-to-date exports. We will tell you in the App when kit restore becomes available.

14.4 Sync is not a backup. When sync is on, encrypted copies of your recent changes pass through our sync service. We keep them only for a limited window so your other devices can catch up: currently up to 7 days on the free plan and up to 30 days on paid plans, and never more than 90 days for your account's own records. After that they are deleted. They are unreadable without your keys. We may keep them for less time if a device or the service fails. Shared ledgers and the list of linked devices follow different rules, described in the Privacy Policy. Do not rely on the sync service to keep a copy of your records.

14.5 What we ask you to do. To protect your records, please:

14.6 Mistakes in imported and assisted content. Bank feeds, file imports, receipt reading, sync between devices, and AI features can produce errors, duplicates, gaps or wrong categories. They help you keep records. They do not replace checking them against your statements, invoices and receipts.

14.7 What Janisis is responsible for. We will design, build, test and run the Apps and the Service with due care and skill. If your records are lost, damaged or changed because we failed to do that, because of a defect in the Apps or the Service, because of our negligence, or because we breached the Agreement, we are responsible for that, as set out in sections 14.9, 14.10, 16 and 17. If we become aware of a problem in the Apps or the Service that we reasonably believe has lost or damaged users' records, we will:

14.8 If we stop the online Service. If we decide to stop providing sync, accounts or recovery, we will give you at least 90 days' notice in the App, keep export working for that time, and refund any prepaid fees for the period after the online Service stops. Reading and exporting records already on your devices does not depend on the online Service.

14.9 If you are in Australia, section 17 applies. The limits in 14.10 and section 16 do not apply to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

14.10 Limits on our responsibility. Subject to 14.7, 14.9 and any right the law does not let us exclude or limit:

Nothing in 14.10 limits our liability for fraud, wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or for failing to meet our commitments in 14.7.

15. Warranties

15.1 We provide the Apps and the Service with due care and skill. Other than that, and other than the rights in sections 17 and 18 and any others the law gives you, we do not promise that the Apps will be uninterrupted, error-free or suitable for a particular purpose.

15.2 FOR USERS OUTSIDE AUSTRALIA, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, AND EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY STATED IN THESE TERMS, THE APPS AND THE SERVICE ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT AND ACCURACY. JANISIS DOES NOT WARRANT THAT YOUR RECORDS WILL BE PRESERVED, SYNCED WITHOUT ERROR, OR RECOVERABLE, AND PROVIDES NO BACKUP, ARCHIVE OR DATA RECOVERY SERVICE.

16. Limitation of liability

16.1 TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, JANISIS IS NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, REVENUE OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE AGREEMENT OR THE APPS. SECTION 14 GOVERNS LOSS OF RECORDS.

16.2 TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, JANISIS'S TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE AGREEMENT OR THE APPS IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE FEES YOU PAID JANISIS FOR THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, AND (B) US$100, OR A$150 IF YOU LIVE IN AUSTRALIA.

16.3 Nothing in sections 14, 15 or 16 limits our liability for fraud, gross negligence, wilful misconduct, death or personal injury caused by negligence, our commitments in 14.7, or anything else the law does not allow us to limit.

17. If you are in Australia

17.1 Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled to cancel your service contract with us and to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value. You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. If the failure does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have problems with the service rectified in a reasonable time and, if this is not done, to cancel your contract and obtain a refund for the unused portion of the contract.

17.2 Nothing in the Agreement excludes, restricts or modifies those rights, or any right under the ASIC Act where it applies. The limits in sections 14.10, 15 and 16 do not apply to them.

17.3 To make a claim or complaint, contact us at support@sumone.app. We will reply within 10 business days. You can also contact your state or territory consumer protection agency.

18. If you are in the United States

18.1 SECTIONS 14.10, 15.2 AND 16 LIMIT OUR LIABILITY. PLEASE READ THEM CAREFULLY.

18.2 SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR THE LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO SOME OF THOSE LIMITS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU, AND YOU MAY HAVE OTHER RIGHTS THAT VARY BY STATE.

18.3 IF YOU ARE A NEW JERSEY RESIDENT, SECTIONS 14.10, 15, 16 AND 19 APPLY ONLY TO THE EXTENT NEW JERSEY LAW PERMITS, AND NOTHING IN THEM LIMITS OUR LIABILITY FOR OUR OWN NEGLIGENCE, FRAUD OR WILFUL MISCONDUCT WHERE NEW JERSEY LAW FORBIDS IT.

18.4 If you are a California resident, you may report complaints to the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

19. Indemnity

19.1 If someone else makes a claim against us because of your unlawful use of the Apps or your material breach of the Agreement, you will cover our reasonable costs directly arising from that claim, to the extent you caused it.

19.2 This does not apply to the extent the claim arises from our own breach, negligence or wrongful act. It does not limit any right you have as a consumer that the law does not let you give up.

20. Ending the Agreement

20.1 You can stop using the Apps at any time. To delete your SumOne account, follow the Deletion and Export notice (https://sumone.app/legal/deletion-export). You can do this in the App, under Settings, Account, "Delete account".

20.2 We may suspend or end your access to the online Service (account, sync and other server features) if you materially breach the Agreement and, where the breach can be fixed, you do not fix it within a reasonable time after we tell you. We may suspend access straight away if that is needed to protect the Service or other users from serious harm, and we will tell you why.

20.3 Reading and exporting the records on your devices survive any suspension or ending. If we end the Agreement other than for your breach, we will refund any prepaid fees for the unused period.

20.4 Sections 2.2, 5, 10.2, 14 to 19, 21 and 22, and the retention of acceptance records, survive the end of the Agreement.

21. Governing law and disputes

21.1 Talk to us first. If you have a problem, please contact support@sumone.app first. Most issues can be fixed quickly. If either of us has a formal claim, we will first send the other a written notice describing it, and we will both try in good faith to resolve it for 30 days before starting a case. This does not stop you from using a small claims court, complaining to a regulator, or acting sooner if a time limit would otherwise run out.

21.2 Australia. If you live in Australia, the Agreement is governed by the law of the state or territory where you live, and you may bring proceedings in the courts there.

21.3 United States. If you live in the United States, the Agreement is governed by the laws of Delaware, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, except that the consumer protection laws of your state of residence that cannot be waived still apply. Either of us may bring an individual claim in small claims court in your county of residence. Otherwise, claims will be decided in the state or federal courts for your county of residence or for Delaware.

21.4 European Union, United Kingdom and elsewhere. If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another country whose consumer laws give you rights or a local court that cannot be taken away by contract, those rights and courts apply. Otherwise, the laws of Delaware apply.

21.5 Nothing in this section takes away a right you have as a consumer that the law says cannot be waived.

22. General

22.1 If any part of the Agreement cannot be enforced, the rest stays in force, and the part is applied as far as the law allows.

22.2 The Agreement is the whole agreement between you and Janisis about the Apps. For App Store copies, it sits alongside Apple's terms as section 3 explains.

22.3 You may not transfer the Agreement. We may transfer it to a business that takes over the Apps, if that business agrees to honour it. We will tell you if this happens.

22.4 If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.

22.5 We are not responsible for delays caused by events outside our reasonable control, but we will tell you and do what we reasonably can.

22.6 We will send notices in the App or to your account email. You can reach us as set out below.
